Welcome to Huddersfield Art Society’s 124th Annual Exhibition and 1st Online Exhibition.

We live in difficult times, the impact of COVID 19 on our lives, has provided us with new challenges. The stress of lockdown has upset our normal pattern of creativity and as artists we have had to adapt to working in different “studios”.  For some time there was no opportunity to work en plein air or in commune with fellow artists. We worked in isolation in our homes taking inspiration from our immediate surroundings: the interior of a room, the view from a window, the flora and fauna in a garden and housemates who became our models.
Huddersfield Art Society set us achievable challenges: a portrait of someone reading, a perception of lockdown, an abstract tile, reflections in glass and the one we all dreamed about “I wish I was here”.
During this period we discovered new ways of working, perhaps using available materials to draw with and on, all those packages arriving with online orders provided card surfaces for canvases, the mediums tucked away at the back of the cupboard that hadn’t been used for years saw the light of day and we experimented with mixed media.
Gradually, as lockdown eased we ventured outside and even met with other artists to work alongside each other in a “new normal”, socially distanced way.
The result of all this is our wonderful 2020 Online Autumn Exhibition. At a time when we should have been showing our work in Huddersfield Town Centre we are delighted to be able to present 159 artworks from 39 members of our society to a Worldwide online audience this year!
There are four awards.
  • The Eleanor Sykes Award for Best Artwork
  • The Pat Pridmore Memorial Award for Best Artwork from direct observation of the subject
  • The Calder Graphics Award for Best Artwork inspired by Lockdown
  • The Member’s Vote Award for most popular Artwork
Many of the artworks are for sale and some artists are donating a percentage of their sales to the charity of their choice.
We hope you enjoy our show and will share the experience with your online friends in all corners of the globe. This is a worldwide pandemic, we all need a bit of light in our lives let’s spread the joy of viewing Huddersfield Art Society’s fabulous exhibition!
